Amazingly, I won an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Research on the PBS Nature documentary, Chimpanzees: An Unnatural History. (I was the Associate Producer) The film profiled the lives of 7 individual chimps, and I'm most proud of the fact that a national award such as the Emmy will bring more attention to the film and help increase awareness of the issues that captive chimpanzees in entertainment and research face every day." ---Great Work, Cici!

Current projects in active development include Distance, the story of French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot; Chandler, a film noir set in 1930s Los Angeles about writer Raymond Chandler; and A Thousand Cranes, an epic love story set against the backdrop of the bombing of Hiroshima. Her film Frida opened the Venice Film Festival in 2002, was named one of the Ten Best Films of 2002 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute, and was nominated for six Academy Awards in 2003. Diane has a B.F.A. from Drake University, an M.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and teaches screenwriting at Emerson College. The Emerson College student group Spec was founded to develop a forum for students interested in the art of screenwriting to meet, workshop, and critique each other's scripts. The group is open to all Emerson students, and serves the film community by hosting workshops, performance-style readings, and an annual screenwriting contest. This year's winner of the Spec Screenwriting Contest was selected by an executive at Reese Witherspoon's company Type A Productions and will be announced by Diane Lake. WIFV/NE hosts an annual screenwriting contest that aims to promote the work of women screenwriters and support the creation of worthy film roles for women. The contest is open to all aspiring screenwriters but entries must be authored or co-authored by a woman and/or feature a woman or women in prominent roles. Los Angeles-based screenwriter Kate Boutilier (The Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys) served as judge and selected the winner, two runners-up, and an honorable mention. The four finalists were chosen from over ninety submissions from around the country, and the Grand Prize includes script review by a prominent literary agent for possible representation, Final Draft software, professional script coverage, and online script placement service from Inktip. WIFV/NE member and Emerson College professor Jami Brandli served as this year's Screenwriting Competition Chair. The Women in Film/General Motors Alliance has generously provided funding for the event. Announced in 2005, the three-year national sponsorship program was created to support women in the entertainment industry and to expand the programs of Women In Film chapters across the country. Some of the programs supported by the initiative include mentorships, scholarships, film funds, filmmaker grants, college lectures, PSAs, and Chapter events. Last month, WIFV/NE awarded the first annual WIF/GM Accelerating the Creative Scholarship to Boston filmmaker Lorna Lowe Streeter at its networking breakfast at WGBH.
